AIADMK has urged the Centre to provide adequate security cover to its leader and former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa following a threatening letter warning her of “serious consequences” if she continued with her opposition to the cause of Tamil Eelam and LTTE.
In a letter to Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil, AIADMK leader V Maitreyan, MP, said the Centre should consider adequate security to Jayalalithaa as she was in the hit list of the banned LTTE.
The security arrangements that have been provided to Jayalalithaa were inadequate when compared to the security perception and the magnitude of the security threat that she was facing, he said.
“Due to the sustained efforts of Jayalalithaa, the LTTE which was mainly responsible for assassination of Rajiv Gandhi was banned under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act,” he said.
As the LTTE activists within the state regrouped and formed the Tamil National Retrieval Troops (TNRT) and Tamil Nadu Liberation Army (TNLA) to continue their extremist activities, she imposed a ban on these outfits also, Maitreyan said.
“However, in view of the stern action taken by her, she is in the hit lit of the LTTE”, he added.
Later, Jayalalithaa told reporters at the Chennai airport on returning from Pasumpon that the attack on her motorcade “proved that the law and order situation in the state was deteriorating.” “The police are having no control over law and order and this incident is an ample proof to that,” she said.
Meanwhile, police said an armed reserve sub-inspector at Arulanand and grade-I constable, Murugesan, who suffered serious injuries, had been admitted to the Madurai Government Rajaji Hospital.
Additional police reinforcement has been sought in Ramanathapuram District as the situation was still tense though under control.
