The Ghaziabad police have launched a verification drive to check on anti-social elements in the district in the aftermath of the Mumbai attacks.

Ghaziabad Superintendent of Police Vijay Bhushan said that apart from checking residents’ credentials, the drive will also focus on the student community. “In several past terrorist attacks it was found that students and men in their early 20s were involved,” the SP said. “Their antecedents will be checked thoroughly,” Bhushan said.

A 60-member team comprising senior police officers has been constituted for the drive that is likely to be completed in the next few weeks.

The drive will be conducted in two phases. In the first phase, areas neighbouring Delhi will be covered as they are considered sensitive. In the next phase, rural parts of the district will be targetted,” the SP said.

Even MNCs based in the district will be asked to maintain a detailed profile of their employees so that the police can verify them.

Bhushan said that over the past few days several measures have been taken to enhance security in the city to avert possible terrorist attacks. “We have increased patrolling, apart from placing pickets at strategic locations,” he said.
