JANUARY 11: The Mahanagar Gas Ltd (MGL) has informed that the explosion that took place at Ghatkopar last month could not possibly have been caused by its products and services. The company's name had been mentioned in newspaper reports after the incident. Spokesperson for MGL, Alka R Kumar stated that two contract workers of the company were at the site carrying out air testing of the system as a precautionary measure before clearing the way for supply of piped gas to begin. At the time of the explosion, installation of equipment for receiving piped gas was still in progress, and modifications to the cooking stove were pending. Supply of gas to the affected apartment had not begun, and residents continued to use LPG for cooking, Kumar added.``This was verified after the explosion by the fact that the gas meter in the apartment's kitchen was still at the original factory-set reading. The ball valves controlling the gas flow were also found in a closed condition,'' she said.Company officials alsomentioned that their equipment inside the kitchen was found to have been totally unaffected in the explosion, further confirming the reliability of the installation.
