Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf has said last night’s bomb blast in which he escaped unhurt was an attempt on his life by terrorists even as six persons, including three policemen, were arrested in connection with the incident.

Pakistan’s Interior Minister Faisal Saleh Hayat said the blast could have been triggered by militant groups opposed to recent peace moves by India and Pakistan. Musharraf said: ‘‘It was certainly a terrorist act and, certainly, it was me who was targeted, but let me say that I am used to such incidents, it has happened before also, one does not get bothered.’’

Undeterred by the attack, the President took the same route to go to Rawalpindi to attend a wedding. The blasts took place half a minute after his convoy passed over the bridge.

‘‘I know, that when I came back from Sindh, and as I was returning from Chaklala, and we crossed the Amar Chowk bridge there was a blast just one minute or half a minute after we crossed.’’

Police officials said six persons, including three police personnel were arrested in connection with the blast. The detained police personnel were supposed to guard the bridge till the presidential motorcade passed, officials said adding, however, they were not present when the explosion took place.

Asked who was behind the blasts, Musharraf said: ‘‘It is the militants, extremists, terrorists and fundamentalists, who are out to not only damage our nation but also bring a bad name to our great religion.’’

This was the second attempt on Musharraf’s life in more than a year. — PTI
