MUMBAI, May 23: Gaurav Kumar and Lisa Pereira claimed the top honours in the boys’ and girls’ under-16 singles category, respectively, of the Maharashtra Junior Tennis championships, conducted by the Bushan Tennis Academy, Andheri, today.

Kumar had things his own way when overcoming the lukewarm challenge of Akshay Thanna in straight sets of 6-1, 6-1.

Lisa struggled initially but once she found her bearings, there was no stopping her. She defeated Medini Sharma 7-5, 6-4.

Akshay C got the better of giant-killer Siddharth Chedda in the boys’ under-12 final with 6-2, 7-6 (7-4) triumph. Chedda had toppled the top-seeded Keshavan Narsinhan 6-2, 6-4 in the semi-finals on Friday.

RESULTS

Boys under-16 (final): Gaurav Kumar bt Akshay Thanna 6-1, 6-1. Semi-finals: Akshay Thanna bt Konal Bhojwani 5-2 conceded; Gaurav Kumar bt Vivek Jhaveri 6-1, 6-3.

Boys under-12 (final): Akshay C bt Siddharth Cheda 6-2, 7-6 (7-4). Semi-finals: Siddharth Cheda bt Keshavan Narsinhan 6-2, 6-4; Akshay C BtR Ramnath 6-1, 6-4.

Boys under-10 (final): Agnel Gladwin bt Gaurav Agarwal 4-6, 7-5 (6-1).

Girls under-16 (final): Lisa Pereira bt Medini Sharma 7-5, 6-4. Semi-finals: Liza Pereira bt Anisha Shellar 6-1, 6-1; Medini Sharma bt Rati Kumar 6-4, 6-4.

Girls under-12 (final): Ronak Shah bt Karthiki Bhat 6-0, 1-0 conceded. Semi-finals: Ronak Shah bt Lizenka Pereira 9-1; Karthiki Bhat bt Tulsi Mehta 9-0.

SNG enter semis

Shivaji Nagar Gymkhana (SNG), Nagpur, scored their second consecutive win to join Central Railway and BEG (Kirkee) in the semi-finals of the sixth Savio Club Invitational basketball tournament, sponsored by Killer Jeans, Colgate and Pepsi, at the Don Bosco High School quadrangle, Matunga, yesterday.

SNG beat Nutan Bharat Tarun Sangh (Nagpur) 69-62. However, Both SNG wins have lacked polish of conviction usually associated with this team, which has such a fine record in Mumbai.
