NEW DELHI, AUGUST 29: Priyanka Vadra today gave birth to a baby boy at Gangaram Hospital in New Delhi. The birth by Caesarean section took place at 4.04 pm. The baby weighed 2.67 kg and was healthy, doctors said.

According to Priyanka’s doctor, S.K.Bhandari, she had labour pains since yesterday. “The doctors decided to go for a Caesarean operation after they found that the foetal heart beats were going up,” hospital chairman S.K.Sama said.

“In such a condition, the baby can get into distress unless it is delivered immediately,” he said, adding that Priyanka had gone into spontaneous labour. Priyanka is doing fine, Dr Sama said. The mother and child are likely to be discharged after four days, he said.

Priyanka’s husband, Robert Vadra, kept an anxious vigil outside the operation theatre on the first floor while her mother and Congress president, Sonia Gandhi, was in the room on the second floor which Priyanka had been occupying for the past one week.

Priyanka was taken to the operation theatre around 3.30 pm and the birth took place at 4.04 pm.

The entire hospital was agog with the news in no time and every worker was eager to be quoted about how Priyanka was carried on a stretcher to her room on the second floor after the operation, guarded by a wall of securitymen in plain clothes.

While no Congress workers could be seen outside the hospital till late in the evening, the mood at 10 Janpath was festive. Local MLAs were seen trooping in as party leaders distributed laddoos.
