PUNE, Feb 9: High drama was witnessed on Sunday as 20-odd students including five girls who staged a sit-in outside the governing council (GC) meeting of the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) had to be arrested by the police for not allowing the members to leave the hall three-four hours after the meeting concluded. When contacted, FTII director Mohan Agashe said it was very unfortunate that the police had to be called in to detain the students.
They rolled on the floor, simply not allowing the other members to leave the hall even after the meeting was over some three-four hours before. “We have decided to seek an audience with the Minister before implementing his suggestions,” Agashe said. Already two months of precious constructive time has been wasted and now for another 15 days, there will be no work, he rued.
The GC which met to officially ratify the resolutions arrived at between the Information and Broadcasting Minister Jaipal Reddy and students, however decided to seek an appointmentwith the Minister. This infuriated the students who pointed out that when the Minister had already given the assurance to the students, the GC was resorting to delaying tactics.
Students however were an angry lot and according to third year student Uma, despite pleading and entreating the members to reconsider their decision and immediately contact the Minister, they refused to budge. Among demonstrations and sloganeering of Agashe chale jao (Agashe stay away) the students also expressed the fear that there would be a zero semester by default.
It may be recalled that students had called off their indefinite hunger strike on January 10 outside the Siri Fort auditorium, New Delhi following Information and Broadcasting Minister Jaipal Reddy’s assurance over the implementation of the revised syllabus.
According to the agreement, the Minister had reportedly assured that there would be no zero semester, admissions would take place for the three-year course from July this year where the first year batchwould follow the pre-1996 syllabus pattern.
An agreement had also been reached that there would be no qualitative dilution of the revised syllabus and the study of the revised syllabus would be done by the faculty and the representatives of the review panel in a period of eight months, in terms of the five parameters indicated by the Academic Council.
