It’s about concentration and relaxation rather than 'eye exercise' in a medical sense, said Dr Chaitanya Vemu, consultant ophthalmologist, KIMS Hospitals, Thane

Abhay Deol recently sat down for a freewheeling chat with astrologer and life coach Jai Madaan, during which he spoke about being regular with meditation for the past couple of years. “One really effective meditation is tratak or candle gazing with a ghee lamp. My focus is not on not blinking. My focus is more just concentration, sitting in stillness, observing, and trying to ground myself before I start the day,” the actor said.

But what exactly is tratak?

Dr Chaitanya Vemu, consultant ophthalmologist, KIMS Hospitals, Thane, said that tratak is a yogic practice where one focuses on a single point, often a candle flame. “It’s about concentration and relaxation rather than ‘eye exercise’ in a medical sense. While it can reduce mental stress and improve focus, there’s no solid scientific proof that it strengthens vision or prevents eye disease,” said Dr Vemu.
