against the Indo-China relations was an indication of his political bankruptcy. The former defence minister in the NDA government said it was the BJP-led NDA government’s “mistake” to support China’s claim that Tibet was a part of the country. His criticism of L.K. Advani and the NDA does not suit a leader of his calibre, the editorial says, because he was a part of the alliance and as such morally responsible for the performance of the NDA government. Fernandes’ statement that China is India’s topmost enemy will hamper the UPA Government’s efforts to improve the relation between the two countries. He has been out of the media glare for a year and has used the opportunity to get back by making controversial statements, according to the editorial.

While sharing of Cauvery waters has always been a sensitive issue for Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, the Hogenakkal Integrated Drinking Water Project dispute—centering on the DMK Government’s plan to take river water to Dharmapuri and Krishnagiri districts—has broken out just when Karnataka is going for polls, the editorial states. While former chief minister S.M. Krishna called on the prime minister to ask him to exert influence on the DMK to halt the project till elections, Union Shipping Minister T.R. Baalu asked the PM to advise Karnataka to give up its opposition.

An editorial says the Congress has been forced to speak out against Mayawati due to her increasing clout in the national politics. Mayawati has flourished with support from the Congress and the BJP and by supporting them. She, however, has consistently refused to go for seat-sharing arrangement in states, which has hit the Congress hard, the editorial says. This has unnerved the Congress.
