Aarushi had scrawled a message on the ‘wall’ of her Facebook site the day before she died: “My birthday is coming, please wish me!” unveils a community formed on an Internet social networking site by some of her classmates. The name of the community is “RIP (Rest In Peace) Aarushi,” and has already garnered as many as 432 posts commemorating the girl who was found murdered in her house on May 16. On Friday, the father of the class IX student was arrested for the crime, but Aarushi’s friends want to remember her life, not just the terrible way she died.
“Her presence lightened the atmosphere in the IX wing, even though she never opened her mouth very often. She was loved by all and there were many things we wanted to say but she went,” says the first note on the memorial site.
In the real world, Aarushi’s friends celebrated her birthday by lighting candles on her empty desk, but memories of how vibrant she was kept pouring into the virtual club: her friends remembered how much she used to enjoy performing Ashley Lobo steps in the school corridors, how keen she was to be a part of her school’s prestigious Interact Club, how she looked forward to joining taekwondo classes. The write-up described Aarushi’s serious side as well: juniors looked up to her, she was captain of the ‘Ganges House’, she once prepared a meaningful project on drug abuse.
We also learn how those who loved Aarushi were devastated by the crime — her best friend (name withheld) was numb after losing her and was almost mute with shock after the incident. Providing a touching glimpse into the complexities of teenage life, the site reveals how two boys were in love with her; one who could not express his feelings when Aarushi was alive and the other who became one of her closest friends.
Calling it “ironic,” the post revealed that while playing a game with her friends a few days before, Aarushi had told them “I will be always be there for all of you, whether I am physically present or not. Love you all.”
Her friends can only hope she can see their answer on the website: “We love you and you will always be in our hearts no matter where you are.”
