BANGALORE, MARCH 9: V K Narasimhan, doyen of Indian journalism and former Editor-in-Chief of The Indian Express, died at Puttaparthy in Andhra Pradesh on Thursday after a brief illness, his son V N Narayanan said.
Narasimhan, 88, is survived by three sons and two daughters, Narayanan, former editor of The Hindustan Times, told PTI over phone from Puttaparthy.
After a distinguished career spanning 40 years in journalism, including a 19-month spell in The Indian Express during the Emergency, when he was praised for holding aloft the banner of press freedom, Narasimhan spent the last years of his life as a devotee of Sri Sathya Sai Baba at Puttaparthy. He was also Deputy Editor of The Hindu, Chennai, and Editor of The Deccan Herald, Bangalore.
Narasimhan did not bid goodbye to printer’s ink and served till the end as the Editor of Santhana Sarathi, the official publication of the Sri Sathya Sai Books and Publications Trust, Prashanti Nilayam.
Winner of the first B D Goenka award for excellence in journalism, Narasimhan was associated with a variety of media activities and institutions and was a member of the Second Press Commission.
