Chennai, August 19: Reefat Bin Sattar of Bangladesh broke away from his trail of disappointments with a crushing victory over Alexander Fominyh in the sixth round of the Pentamedia Grandmaster chess tournament. It happened to be the Russian's first defeat in India. Krishnan Sasikiran (India) and Evgeny Vladimirov meant business with another effortless win over Sandipan Chanda (India) and Abhijit Kunte at Kelambakkam, here on Saturday. Sasi is leading with five points while Vladimirov has 4.5 points. India's GM norm aspirant Devaki Prasad had to blame himself for his predicament on Saturday. After outplaying Uzbek Saidali Yuldachev in the Ruy Lopez (d4 variation), he went for a unnecessary knight sacrifice when he had a simple win in hand. He missed a queen check at d2 which allowed a perpetual check for Yuldachev. Prasad saw a lot of variations and played well. However, he had to pay the price for getting too excited. He faces a near impossible task of getting six out of six for the GM norm. He missed a winwith Prakash. Had a below par performance against Barua and should thank his stars for today's draw. Sattar comes good: Reefat finally came good while Fominyh, who had wriggled out of hopeless positons in the Sicilian Taimanov before, never got a chance and was defeated fair and square. Reefat got a tremendous hold in the position after 16 c5. And, with Fominyh's pieces struggling to come to life, Reefat thrusted his pawns, initiating a kingside attack. The Russian could only watch as Reefat's pawn came to h7 from f2. His two bishops on d3 and d4 were waiting to explode. Fominyh charged up his queen on the h file, anticipating some defence. Sattar ended the game with a finesse (30 Rf6). Sasikiran showed better understanding than Sandipan Chanda by accepting rook for two pieces in the 20th move from the Scotch opening. The ending was reached with Chanda having bishop and knight while Sasikiran had an active rook with a few extra pawns.
