A fisherman hailing from Fort Kochi, who was taken into custody by the police, was admitted to the Ernakulam General Hospital yesterday. Anandamparambil A.L. Roy, 34, of Fort Kochi Beach Road was admitted to the hospital with serious injuries allegedly due to police brutality, while in custody at the Thoppumpady police station
for two days.
Roy was taken into custody on the charges of burglary of a chain from the house of Ponnumpurakal Raphael. He was set free after it was ascertained that he was working at the boatyard on the day of the burglary and the missing chain was recovered from the courtyard of Ponnumparambil Raphael.
However, the alleged police torture has affected the functioning of Roy’s kidneys. Roy has also lodged a complaint with the police commissioner in this regard.
