Directed by Akira Kurosawa the cast includes Zushi Yoshitaka (Rokuchan), Kin Sugai (Okui-san, Rokuchan’s mother) Kasuo Katao (painter on the roadside)Kurosawa’s first film in colour is about the residents of a Tokyo slum. One of the denizens of the area is a challenged boy, with dreams of becoming a streetcar motorman. He chugs his way through the neighbourhood’s scrap heaps mimicking a trolley’s clacking “…dosdeskaden…” Dodeskaden is a loosely knit collection of vignettes about people who seek some dignity in their lives who search urgently for something that will lend their lives a sense of importance, though we can see that each of them is already wonderfully important.
They are not impelled self-consciously to be good but simply to be wanted and needed. Pauline is spending the end of summer with her cousin Marion at the family villa in Normandy. Marion, recently divorced, runs into a former lover Pierre who introduces her to his new friend Henri. The latter who is married with children soon strikes up a relationship with Marion who has fallen in love with him. A jealous Pierre tries to break them up telling her about Henri’s sailor life-style with many women. Meanwhile Pauline bored with these complications meets Sylvain, a boy her own age…

He finds out that the telephone call was a macabre joke on the part of his father who is anxious to see his son again after many years of separation.

Classical :The Young Musicians’ Concert Series in celebration of the British Council’s 50th anniversary in India presents flautist Brian Finnegan. Irishman Finnegan is an excellent flute and whistle player and mainly concentrates on playing the bamboo flute or the Irish wooden flute. He is equally at home on the high whistles and the low whistles. He has toured the globe both as solo artist and with his own band. He has lived in places as diverse as Budapest in Hungary and Nepal and these myriad influences have seeped into his repertoire almost by osmosis, which consists of traditional tunes as well as original compositions and tunes from further afield.

Marathi melodies is organised by the cultural group Sumanjali. Manatlya Bhavkalya will feature scores composed by Madhusudhan Kulkarni. They will be accompanied by musicians Pramod Ranade, Anil Sukhapure and Vishwanath Gaikwad.

The Bubbles Choice Club have put their talents together for a variety entertainment show scheduled for March 13 at Nehru Memorial Hall. Along with three plays and some song performances, the kids have a fashion show lined up too, along with games for the young audience members. Open for those between 2 and 15 years, this is fun time for kids by kids!
