India and France will sign an extradition treaty during Deputy Prime Minister L.K. Advani’s three-day visit to Paris on January 22.
Sources in the Ministry of Home Affairs said that a treaty of extradition between the two countries had been on the anvil for some time and negotiations had concluded. Advani would be meeting the French PM, the Interior Minister and Justice Minister, who will ink the pact on behalf of the French Government.
Before going to Paris, the Deputy PM is scheduled to stop at Qatar for a day and discuss signing of a Mutual Legal Assistance Agreement with Doha, in addition to an extradition treaty. ‘‘Doha has been asking for a high-level meeting with India for some time. Though the issues of extradition and Legal Assistance pact were discussed earlier too, the two countries would take up the possibility of setting up a Joint Working Group on terrorism for the first time,’’ sources added.
Advani may also meet the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani.
