NEW YORK, JUNE 1: Chess combinations, not musical compositions, will be on the mind of rock star Sting on June 29 when he plays world chess champion Garry Kasparov in an exhibition game in New York’s Times Square.
A spokeswoman for the Russian grandmaster’s website kasparovchess.com said on Wednesday that some proceeds from sponsorship of the event would be donated to Sting’s "Rainforest" environmental-preservation group.
"This is part of our attempt to bring chess to a broader audience, including music fans," the spokeswoman said, "Chess is an international language and music also is an international language."
Grammy award-winning singer and composer Sting is an avid chess player who started discussing the possibility of playing Kasparov for charity about three months ago, another Kasparov representative said.
Kasparov, considered by most experts to be the strongest player in the history of the ancient game, will play Sting and three band members Dominic Miller, Jason Rebello and Chris Botti in a simultaneous exhibition.
The spokeswoman said the games would be played in the Times Square Studios, with the action broadcast on the nearby Jumbotron and several websites.
The event was being held to mark the climax of the World Schools Championship tournament being played over the internet via Kasparov’s website since it went online in March.
