Government has appointed management consultant Ernst 038; Young E038;Y and NSE8217;s infotech subsidiary, nse.It, to be its technology advisors for providing online facilities to all tax payers under the 8216;taxnet8217; scheme. The government has also notified NSDL as the E-TDS intermediary through which tax deduction at source can be filed electronically. 8216;taxnet8217; seeks to create a single respository of assessees nationally to simplify both, the tax administration and collection processes. CBDT member B. Swarup said, 8216;8216;The successful completion of this project will mark a watershed in tax administration in the country. It will enhance tax efficiency for both officials and the assessees.8217;8217;
Swarup also said that from April 1, 2004, personal income tax payees will have to fill only two challans against four needed previously, while TDS filing can be done electronically by both companies and individuals. He said the government will also ensure that tax consultants, chartered accountants etc are allowed to act as intermediaries from April 1, 2004, so that personal return filing is simplified even further.
