ROURKELA, SEPT 18: An engineering student was killed and 14 others injured when police opened fire inside the regional engineering college (REC) campus here to disperse a group of irate students last night, official sources said today.

The police resorted to firing, that killed third year mechanical engineering student G R Sujit, when lathicharge and teargas shells failed to pacify the students who went on rampage within the residence of the REC principal Prof A K Mohanty.

The students were demanding the principal lodge a complaint against the I G hospital authorities where one of the college students died allegedly due to negligence, the sources said.

The authorities had declared the college closed sine die while the hostels were vacated this morning.

Trouble started after a student, Sugat Malla, who was admitted to the I G hospital along with another student, died, the doctors said, of cerebral malaria.
