ROHTAK, Dec 17: Residents of Khidwali village yesterday stoned and manhandled Haryana Vidyut Prasaran Nigam (HVPN) officials and policemen who had come to check power theft. Almost a dozen persons were injured.

A party headed by Superintending Engineer H. K. Sharma left for Khidwali village yesterday. The other members were: Executive Engineer Bhartendu Bhardwaj, Sub-Divisional Officer (SDO) of Bhalot Ram Avtar, SDO Meham, SDO Kalanaur and other Nigam officials. They were accompanied by one Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) and six constables. They headed for Khidwali, 14 km from here, in two jeeps and one canter.

It is learnt that they detected 12 cases of power theft and took three motors into custody. The villagers started pelting stones at them. The windows of the jeeps were broken.

The officials fled but Ram Avtar and a policeman were left behind. The party immediately informed Sadar police station. Police reinforcements were sent to rescue Ram Avtar and the policeman.

Those injured included Ram Avtar, assistant foreman Ram Dhari, lineman Raghbir, assistant linemen Ramesh, Satbir, Gopal, Krishan Paul, driver Om Parkash, Sadar police station ASI and a policeman. They were discharged after a medical examination and first-aid.

The Sadar police have registered a case under Sections 147, 148,186, 353 of the Indian Penal Code against a dozen persons of the village.

The chairman of the Nigam has sanctioned an interim relief of Rs 1,000 each to those who were injured in the incident. He has also directed the district authorities to take action against the culprits.

The Haryana State Electricity Board Workers Union condemned the assault. Bharat Bhushan, secretary of the union, demanded that the culprits be arrested immediately.

No arrest has been made so far.
