CHENNAI, August 7: Over 400 volunteers of the Democratic Youth Federation of India went on a rampage in the City today, stoning buses and looting shops, protesting against the attempt by police to take into custody DYFI members agitating for permission to stage a demonstration. The volunteers gathered near the Central station early today to demand permission for a procession to the Secretariat, to hand over a memorandum to the CM. When permission was denied, they grew restive and resorted to violence, catching the police unawares. Police later made a lathicharge to quell the mob.
