Deputy Superintendent of Police Raymond Diengdoh and a member of the proscribed Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) were killed in an encounter at Pahamundor near Byrnihat in Ri-Bhoi district on Wednesday morning.
According to the police, two HNLC members Andy Lyngdoh and Sarailang Shroiwan were arrested, but two others managed to escape. On a specific information of presence of HNLC members at the jungle in Ri-Bhoi, a team of 16 policemen headed by Diengoh were sent. Spotting the police team, one of the militants fired at the team.
Diengdoh, who was in the front, was hit by a bullet and he died on the spot. In retaliation, police managed to kill one of them and arrest two others.
Before his posting to Nongpoh in Ri-Bhoi, Diengdoh was in-charge of the DGP computer section.
This is second the encounter between the police and the HNLC within a fortnight. Late last month, five HNLC militants were killed and two policemen were injured in an encounter at Shillong.
