After the party played a crucial role in the UPA Government’s victory during the trust motion, the Samajwadi Party (SP) on Thursday indicated that it was not interested in joining the Government.

According to sources, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had asked the SP leadership to consider joining the Government, but the SP is learnt to have declined the prime minister’s offer. “I am not the right person to answer the question whether the party would participate in the Government or not. It is not possible to answer this question now but we are not interested in joining the Government,” said SP general secretary Amar Singh, responding to a question whether his party would join the Government.

Singh’s statement came after a meeting between SP Chief Mulayam Singh Yadav and Amar Singh with Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Wednesday where both leaders congratulated the UPA chairperson for winning the trust vote. The SP leadership has been informed that the Prime Minister would soon be calling a formal meeting of the alliance partners after having won the trust vote.

“We had an informal meeting yesterday where we exchanged greetings. We have not discussed anything with her on our demands,” said Amar Singh.

The SP with 35 MPs is expected to play a key role in the survival of the UPA Government after the Left parties withdrew their support.
