Samajwadi Party president Mulayam Singh Yadav today came down heavily on his party cadre, asking them to oversee the functioning of the government rather than milk the administrative machinery. Rattled by their complaints against the bureaucracy, he said they were to be blamed for turning them into sycophants.
Appearing livid at the party’s executive committee meeting, Mulayam asked partymen to behave if they wanted to stage a comeback in the next elections. ‘‘Your job is not to run the government. As an organisational member, you should keep an eye on the functioning of the government.’’
The tirade began when Parliamentary Affairs Minister Azam Khan, in his opening speech, complained that officials did not pay heed to his orders. Following him, district party office bearers, too, one by one lamented the fact that the bureaucracy was neglecting their orders.
Mulayam said: ‘‘If you make friends with the DM and indulge in his sycophancy, how can you expect him to listen to your orders…How can you expect a station officer to take your orders when he salutes you, touches your feet or sits next to you?’’ He asked party workers why they were often found camping in the state capital and spending so much on putting up at hotels. ‘‘Where do you get so much money from?’’ he said.
‘40 MLAs, 40 cases, govt will stay’
CM Mulayam Singh Yadav allayed fears of any threat to his government on account of the court cases against the 40 MLAs who had defected from the BSP and joined the SP. ‘‘Just think of it, there are 40 MLAs, there have to be 40 lawyers fighting their cases. Each one of them would be given time to present his case. Meanwhile, the government would complete its term,’’ he said. — ENS
