BJP steps up pressure, to move HC: Stepping up its offensive against the ruling Congress in Uttaranchal, the main Opposition BJP has decided to move the Nainital High Court seeking the disqualification of 18 ruling party MLAs, alleging that they were all holding offices of profit. Meanwhile, in a move to counter the BJP offensive, the state government has introduced a Prevention of Disqualification Bill to protect the membership of the Congress MLAs, who are allegedly holding offices of profit. State Parliamentary Affairs Minister Indira Hridayesh on Friday introduced the Bill in the Vidhan Sabha amid a walkout by the entire Opposition.

Arunachal Pradesh

Complaint filed against 20 MLAs: The office-of-profit controversy surfaced in Arunachal Pradesh on Sunday with the Opposition BJP petitioning Governor S K Singh to disqualify 20 legislators, 16 belonging to the ruling Congress and four independents, supporting the Gegong Apang government. According to a BJP spokesman, the petition signed by the state party president Bosiram Siram and others was submitted to the Governor8217;s secretary in his absence. The spokesman said that 10 of the MLAs were chairman of PSUs and boards, and six others were advisors to the Chief Minister. Four were parliamentary secretaries, it said. The ruling Congress has 34 members in the 60-member House, while 13 belonging to the Arunachal Congress and the NCP support the Gegong Apang ministry from outside.

Tripura

Gov refers 14 CPM MLAs to EC: Tripura governor D N Sahay referred the names of 14 CPIM legislators to the Election Commission on Sunday to determine whether they held offices of profit. A delegation of leaders from the Opposition Congress and the Indigenous Nationalist Party of Tripura INPT, led by Leader of the Opposition Ratan Lal Nath, met Sahay on Sunday and demanded the MLAs removal.
