Dimpy’s last mins: On phone with pal…and then shot

The Indian Express got the details from the Chandigarh Police Crime Branch — indicate though Dimpy apprehended threat to his life, Harneev assured him repeatedly that everything was fine, and he need not worry.

There is repeated mention of a gold chain that Dimpy was supposed to return Harneev on Friday evening.

The police recovered a cellphone memory card from Harneev’s car (the assailants had opened fire in the Maruti Swift car when the two were sitting in it outside the lake Club, and she had later driven Dimpy to her home). According to the cops, Harneev had used the memory card, though Harneev’s brother had picked up two cellphones from the car’s rear seat after she reached her Sector-8 home.

Memory cards provide additional storage space in mobile phones, and police said Harneev was using one to record all exchanges on her cellphone. She recorded all exchanges with Dimpy on Friday evening, the cops added.

The details of the five calls exchanged between Dimpy and Harneev emerged on scrutinising the memory card.

Harneev told Newsline: “Hardly had Dimpy come in (the car) and handed me the gold chain than two youths in motorcycle came close to the car and the pillion rider pointed a pistol at the window. They were without helmets, and before I could realise anything, he fired several shots, which hit Dimpy and me.

“The car’s ignition was on, and I put it in gear and sped away. Dimpy just uttered, ‘Oh gaya, oh shit’, and fell unconscious.”

According to reports, Harneev’s parents took her to General Hospital in a private vehicle, while Dimpy was left lying in her car. Harneev’s father rang the PCR, yet he did not take Dimpy to hospital, police said. A UT PCR ambulance took Dimpy to GH-16, where he was declared brought dead.

Harneev is still in PGI’s Emergency, but the doctors today declared her condition as stable.
