The World Hockey Player and the Most Promising Player of the Year awards for the year 2004 will be announced by the International Hockey Federation (FIH) on December 9 in Lahore, and India has three representatives in the fray.
Gagan Ajit Singh and Dilip Tirkey have been nominated for the Best Player award, and goalkeeper Adrian D’Souza has been nominated in the Most Promising Player category.
No Indian has ever won recognition on the world stage, despite some brilliant performances over the years. In fact, last year was a watershed for the sport in the country when they won five of the seven touraments they played in.
It’s easy to conclude that India has got a raw deal over time, but to be fair, of the three nominations, only D’Souza stands a chance. Tirkey is past his prime and Gagan Ajit has been out of form and out of the Indian team far too frequently of late.
