
CHANDIGARH, April 6: Digvijay Singh shot an incredible three under 69 to lead the field on the opening day of the Bharat Petroleum Samarvir Sahi Chandigarh Open amateur golf championship, which got underway at the Chandigarh Golf Club here today.
Digvijay, played consistent golf and had seven pars, a birdie on the sixth and eighth, in the first half. He started the back nine with a birdie on 10th but dropped a shot on the 12th to go back to two under. His last birdie of the day was on the 17th hole, which gave him a five shot lead over the nearest competitor Shiraz Kalra.
Shiraz, who has recovered from his defeat in the All India final, shot two over 74 today. He played a consistent one over on the front nine and one over on the back nine Local golfer Harmeet Kahlon trailed at the third place with one shot behind Shiraz.
At fourth position with identical scores of 76, were Anitya Chand and Vinod Kumar. There are four golfers who are joint fifth. Naman Dawar, Jatin Johal, Simarjeet Singh and Sandeep Verma shot five over 77.
Every tournament has its share of casualties. Today it was the turn of a gardner who was hit by a falling golf ball while he was raking the ninth green side bunker.
