The MTNL today informed the Delhi High Court that it has recovered Rs 60 lakh in the last 20 days from MPs who had outstanding telephone bills. The NDMC counsel also said the council had also recovered Rs 33 lakh as payments for outstanding electricity and water bills.
The court had directed the authorities to take steps to recover the dues from sitting and former MPs. The bench comprising Chief Justice B.C. Patel and Justice B.D. Ahmed today issued a notice to the LS Secretariat and the BSNL chairman.
NDMC counsel Hima Kohli said MPs have come forward to clear their dues after the matter was highlighted in the PIL. MTNL counsel Dinesh Agnani, however, informed the HC that BSNL should also be issued a notice as the phone dues accruing from MP constituencies could only be recovered. Agnani also said the Lok Sabha Secretariat is not assisting them in recovering the dues of former MPs. As per rules, MPs continue to use their telephones till the constitution of the next Lok Sabha and avail of the free local calls available to them. MTNL counsel said the MPS are entitled to 1,50,000 calls but it is difficult to recover the dues after dissolution of the House.
