A slice of cheese with a roti or a slice of bread, both made from whole wheat, would have approximately 8 gms of fat. But when this cheese is combined with a meat patty in a burger, the fat content of the food escalates three times.

The quantity of food matters too. A small piece of chocolate after dinner is not likely to elevate sugars as much as a larger piece of “sugar free cake/pie”, obviously due to the difference in total carbohydrate content.

Please note, overeating even the most nutritious of foods can interfere with the goals of management. As we tend to eat out more and more, some awareness regarding the method of preparation is also helpful.

A vegetable salad is surely regarded as a healthy choice but do check the ingredients that go into the dressing, which could be calorie dense.

It is also evident that it is not just the property and features of the individual food that are to be taken into account, but many other factors as well. This is one reason why nutritionists have bid goodbye to “not allowed foods” lists.

To sum up, meal plans for diabetics should comprise of measured amounts of carbohydrates primarily from grains-that are as little refined as possible-fruits and vegetables. The protein and fat components are required in smaller amounts.

Keeping the long-term perspective in mind, some allowances for occasional indulgences within the prescribed carbohydrate content are allowed.
