
NEW DELHI, August 9: Dhanvantri Thakur of Madhya Pradesh and Sushila of Tamil Nadu came second and third, respectively, in 10-km walk in women’s section (35 years) in the 13th World Veterans Athletic Championships held at Gateshead (New Castle). The event was won by an Australian, who clocked 1 hr 8 minutes. Dhanvantri was clocked 1 hr 15 minutes.
Ajmer Singh finished third in hammer throw with a heave of 53 metres for men in above 60 age group. India sent about 100 athletes in various age groups for the world meet. A number of other Indians finished in the 5-8 slots in their respective events, according to S S Kapoor, sports-in-charge, Delhi University, who accompanied the squad as technical delegate.
Ramjas basketball
The fifth Ramjasinter-school basketball tournament for boys of secondary and senior secondary schools will be held in the third week of August. All the Capital’s schools and those from the neighbouring states are eligible for participation in the tournament. Entries can be had from the convenor or principal of the school (No. 4) on Chitra Gupta Road, Paharganj. There will be no entry fees.
Shastri triumph
Former champions Shastri Club saved themselves the embarrassment of being relegated to the B division as they scrapped past Collegians 1-0 in an otherwise insignificant DSA-SAIL Senior Division league encounter at the Nehru Stadium warm-up grounds here today.
