Over 100 DGPs will attend a three-day conference in Vigyan Bhavan from November 3 to 5 and officials say the need for having a ‘‘coordinated approach’’ to tackle Left-wing extremism will come into sharp focus during the meet.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Home Minister Shivraj Patil and Intelligence Bureau Chief Ajit Doval will address DGPs of all States and Central Police Organisations (CPOs). It is understood that in keeping with the trend of having a close interaction with top bureaucrats, the Prime Minister has asked for a longer closed-door meeting with a core group of DGPs, including heads of some sensitive CPOs.

Besides left-wing extremism, the DGP meet is expected to firm up the charter for two co-ordination bodies that were set up around two years ago, following recommendations of the Group of Ministers after the Kargil conflict: the Multi Agency Committee and the Joint Task Force.
