MUMBAI, MARCH 12: The Congress-led Democratic Front Government on Sunday ordered inquiry into the deployment of surplus police officials for the security of Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray.
Deputy Chief Minister Chhagan Bhujbal said against the sanctioned strength of 43 officials under the Z+ security cover, a record number of 208 police officials were deployed for the security of Thackeray.
"We will have to inquire into the deployment of surplus security staff for Thackeray. We will examine if the additional security was provided following recommendations made by the high-level committee or by the political head of the erstwhile Sena-BJP government," Bhujbal said.
Bhujbal said it was unfortunate that there was a lot of hue and cry after the Government marginally reduced the security cover from 208 officials to 158. "I feel no other leader in the country has such a large security cover. Besides surplus manpower, more than a dozen vehicles of the police department were at the disposal of Thackeray," Bhujbal added.
Bhujbal said along with Thackeray, security cover for several politicians as well as Cabinet members has been reduced on the basis of the report submitted by the review committee. "We have also reduced the security cover of former MPCC president Prataprao Bhosale and Cabinet members Padamsinh Patil and Madhukar Pichad," he added.
On the drastic cut in the security cover for TADA designate Judge Pramod Kode, Bhujbal said it has been restored with immediate effect. "It was brought to my notice that security cover for the Judge has been reduced. I have asked the Commissioner of Police to immediately restore the security," Bhujbal added.
