CHANDIGARH, May 26: The eight-lane synthetic track, which was laid in 1988 at Ludhiana for the National Games, has been put into operation after getting all the defects removed. The track was badly damaged due to a number of functions not relating to sports activities in the past few years. However, the Punjab Government has now put a ban on allotting the stadia in the state for other than sports activities.

According to Punjab Sports Director Col. Ramindar Singh, the damaged synthetic track was inspected by German experts who had laid a synthetic track at Jalandhar. As per the recommendations of the experts, an action plan was evolved to make the track functional.

An expert committee was constituted under Joint Director Sports and the repair work was completed within two weeks.

After inspection of the track by Col Ramindar Singh yesterday, a maintenance schedule was given to the District Sports Officer. With the commissioning of the track at Jalandhar, Punjab will have two synthetic tracks for athletes.According to Col Ramindar Singh, an astroturf would also be laid soon in Ludhiana for the benefit of the hockey players.
