The ‘encounter specialist’ of Mumbai Police, Daya Nayak, against whom a case has been registered by Anti-Corruption Bureau for allegedly amassing crores of rupees during his 10-year tenure with the Mumbai Police, was today suspended from service.
Joint Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) Arup Patnaik said Nayak, a sub-inspector, had been suspended from service with immediate effect following a communication from the ACB suggesting action against him.
The ACB had filed a case against Nayak under the
Prevention of Corruption Act and his wife Komal for alleged connivance, after an open inquiry instituted into the assets acquired by Nayak allegedly revealed that he possessed assets worth over Rs 40 lakh, that was 212 per cent more than his income sources, said officials of the ACB.
Meanwhile, Nayak, who has been declared absconding by the ACB, today approached the Bombay High Court to seek anticipatory bail in the case. Hearing the matter, Justice V M Kanade allowed Nayak to withdraw his petition and told his counsel to approach the sessions court first and then come to the High Court, if necessary.
Nayak’s counsel pleaded that they had approached the High Court because it had earlier heard some related matters about the petitioner. However, the judge said this contention could not be the ground for approaching the High Court.
