
CHANDIGARH, May 4: The Chandigarh Education Department has released sports scholarships worth Rs 60,000 to DAV Senior Secondary School, Sector 8 for the year 1997-98 for their outstanding performance.
According to Principal Ravinder Talwar cricketers topped the list for scholarships. DAV School, which provides excellent playing facilities, with cemented as well turf wickets, were the winners of the under-14 as well as under-19 titles.
The DAV School’s 36 cricketers received Rs 24,480 as scholarships. The Chandigarh Sports Department is also running a cricket centre at the DAV School. It may be mentioned that former India captain Kapil Dev Nikhanj, a DAV School product, has praised Principal Talwar for taking keen interest in promoting sports. Kapil had also promised the school in floodlighting the ground for the benefit of the cricketers.
The school footballers got Rs 9360 while handball players received Rs 8920. The school also got scholarships in wrestling, volleyball, table tennis, athletics, softball, basketball and badminton.
