PUNE, Sept 22: A sudden out-burst in the second-half proved vital for Dastur High School girls as they sailed into the final with an easy 17-8 win over Abhinav Vidyalaya (English), in the PDMGSC under-14 basketball tournament at the Don Bosco School courts, today.

The first-half proved to be much more exciting with both teams playing good attacking and defending game. Thereby the outcome at the end of first-half was close, 7-6 in favour of Dastur. However after the breather Dastur eves surged ahead with successful attempts at the rival basket which mainly came through Tarkeshwari Nigade. The Abhinav girls were all at sea with hardly any attempts made at the rival basket and managed just a lone basket.

For the winners Tarkeshwari Nigade top scored with 9 points.

In contrast, the earlier semi-final between Huzurpaga School (HHCP) and Hutchings School turned out to be a one sided affair. The Huzurpaga team in an all round performance swamped Hutchings by 23-0.

The winners played an attacking game and saw most of their throws taken at the rival basket fall through. The losers did not offer much resistance and looked a tired lot. Ratika Saraf top scored for Huzurpaga with eight points and Anjali Kokate contributing seven points to the tally.

In the quarter-finals played in the afternoon session, Dastur easily overcame St. Helena’s 11-1 with Tarkeshwari spearheading them with six points to her tally.

Abhinav’s fighting performance saw them book a semi-final berth, with a 11-10 win against St. Anne’s via extra-time. The regular-time score ended at 8-8, although the eventual winners were down by 2-6 in the first-half.

The other two teams who made it to the semi-final were Huzurpaga (HHCP) and Hutchings. While, Huzurpaga defeated St. Joseph’s (Pashan) 14-8 the girls from Hutchings edged out Dr. Shamrao Kalmadi School 6-4.
