Setting aside speculation on the commissioning of the Baglihar Power Project, Union Minister for Water Resources Priya Ranjan Dasmunsi here today said the project would be dedicated to the nation by May 2006. He said the design of the project was withing the technical parameter of the Indus-Water treaty.
The Union minister said they were not worried about the objections raised by the Pakistan, rather they welcome the neutral observer and the Pakistani team to visit the site and have their doubts clarified. Dasmunsi said India is ready to show the project design to Pakistan and the neutral observer.
He said both countries have agreed to the neutral observer. ‘‘Soon, both countries will fix the date to produce the documents before the neutral observer,’’ he added.
He said the Pakistani team will come to India in July. ‘‘For India, there is nothing to worry about as the design and drawing of the project is in accordance with the Indus Water treaty,’’ the minister said.
Turning down Pakistan’s objection that gated spillways would create a flood-like situation, he said before it floods Pakistan, it will first flood Jammu and Kashmir, adding, ‘‘How can we afford to destroy the J&K which is ours.’’.
During his visit, Dasmunsi was accompanied by Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed and Power Minister Mohammad Sharief Niaz. He said he would submit a report to PM Manmohan Singh on the status of the 450 -mw Baglihar project. He, however, rejected that the Baglihar project will be jointly controlled by India and Pakistan.
Dasmunsi refused comment when asked if India would allow Sheikh Rashid, Pakistani Information Minister to visit in the wake of JKLF chief Yasin Malik’s statement that Rashid was instrumental in providing help to militants.
