BARIPADA, MARCH 28: Amidst tight security in Karanjia town, Dara Singh, the principal accused in the gruesome killing of Australian missionary Graham Stuart Staines and his two children last year, was produced before the court of the sub-divisional Judicial Magistrate, Pramod Kumar Jena there on Tuesday.
The court fixed April 11 for the next hearing of the case which was not related to Staines’ killing but was linked to some other incident.
Dara’s counsels, Pradeep Choudhury and Kiran Rout, alleged that Dara’s parents, who wanted to visit Karanjia to meet their son, had been prevented by the Orissa and Uttar Pradesh police.
They also objected to Dara being hand-cuffed by the police while being produced in the court.
Earlier, the police refused persmission to Dharmrakhya Sri Dara Singh Surakhya Samiti, an organisation floated in support of Dara, to hold a rally and meeting in Karanjia town on Tuesday where armed police had been deployed. All the entry points to the town had also been sealed.
The Inspector General of Police, Amarananda Patnaik, DIGs of police – Dilip Rath, Sushil Pradhan and Harihar Panda, and SPs of Maryubhanj and Keonjhar districts are camping in the town.
