RAJKOT, July 31: The district authorities have unearthed a racket of bogus billing and evasion of sales tax amounting to Rs 300 crore by three oil mills and issued arrest warrants against three partners of one of the mills at Gondal town.

After a month-long investigation following a directive from the District Collector Sanjay Prasad, the squad of Civil Supplies found three mills Balmukund Oil Industry of Manavadar in Junagadh district, Ajay Oil Industry of Amreli and Kailash Oilcake Industry of Gondal involved in the racket, according to district collectorate sources. The scandal came to light when the officials were probing another case of bogus billing by two solvent plants which sold huge unaccounted groundnut and rapessed oilcakes to various oil mills in Gujarat and Mumbai, sources added.

Nashik buses to be run by civic body

NASHIK: NASHIK city bus service run by the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation would be handed over to the Nashik Municipal Corporation soon, said the state Transport Minister Chandrakant Khaire on Wednesday. Khaire said the city bus service would be handed over to the municipal corporation in stages with about 25 buses being tranferred in two months. He further said the number on the ST buses and name board will in Marathi instead of English.

Naxalite killed in encounter

GADCHIROLI: A naxalite was killed in an encounter with the police during the anti-Shaheed Week campaign launched by the police on Tuesday last. The district police had tightened the security in the light of the Shaheed Week call given by the naxalites in remote village Kucher, about 23 kms on the west of Bhamragarh. Additional police force was deployed in the area. The naxalites opened fire when they they spotted the police party. The police also fired in reply. A naxalite was killed in the encounter, according to reports.

Record rainfall in Mahabaleshwar

KARAD: Heavy and continuous rains are lashing Satara district for the last four days. During the last 24 hrs 374 mm rain has been recorded at Mahabaleshwar which is the highest in this season. The total rainfall at Mahabaleshwar recorded till Thursday is 3835 mm. The water level in the Koyana Dam is increasing rapidly. The present level is 2150 ft. with the maximum level being 2158.5 ft.
