Cyclone wreaks havoc in Saurashtra region

RAJKOT: Three persons were killed and 100 others injured in a cyclonic storm, in Bhavnagar district in Saurashtra region. The cyclonic storm which lasted for about two hours with a speed reaching upto 100 km per hour has paralysed life in Bhavnagar. Twelve of the injured were admitted to the Bhavnagar civil hospital while the remaining were discharged after first aid, hospital sources said. Many parts of Saurashtra region experienced pre-monsoon rain accompanied with cyclonic wind resulting in disruption of power supply. Over 300 families have become homeless as their houses collapsed in the storm.

HC directive on quake aid petitions

JABALPUR: The Madhya Pradesh High Court has directed the State government to file a reply on two Public Interest Litigations seeking formulation of a suitable rehabilitation programme for earthquake victims and a committee for monitoring relief and rehabilitation work. After preliminary hearing on both the PILs, the vacation division bench fixed June 16 for further hearing as the State advocate general S L Saxena, sought time to file a reply. The petitioners prayed that the government and other agencies, involved in relief and rehabilitation work, be asked to submit a daily report before the court.

Lower FSI sought in congested areas

PUNE: The Pune municipal administration has proposed reduction in the permissible floor space index (FSI) and tenement density in the congested parts of the city even while recommending conversion of balance FSI into transfer of development rights (TDR) as an option to ensure resettlement of the extra tenements. In a docket moved yesterday seeking sanction of the civic city improvement committee, the municipal administration has sought to lower the FSI in R1 zone, indicating highly congested downtown areas, from existing 1.5 to 1 for purely residential purpose.

Vaswani touch fetches Rs 18 lakh

PUNE: The original art work of a logo for Animal Rights Day, bearing the inscription in Dada J P Vaswani’s handwriting, “Reverence for all life is the first step towards world peace,” was auctioned at the Eighth Sadhana camp at New Jersey, USA, for $ 50,000 (Indian equivalent approximately Rs 18 lakh). The four day camp was attended by about 400 persons belonging to different countries and states, including India, Hongkong, Singapore, England, Panama, Spain and Canada.
