
KOLHAPUR, Aug 24: A man from Belgaum accused of murdering a 32-year-old nurse, hailing from Mangalore, was remanded to police custody till August 28 by a first class judicial magistrate here on Saturday.
According to police, Abid Sayyid (40) allegedly murdered Tahirabi Abdul Sayyad on August 17 last by hitting her on the head with an iron rod and administering liquid poison.
Since 1995 onwards, the accused used to mislead the nurse and extort money from her from time to time on pretext of marrying her. On the fateful day, Tahirabi had gone to the residence of the former in Belgaum and quarrelled with him on the issue of their proposed marriage, police told the court.
3 feared drowned in Godavari river
NASHIK: Three persons were feared drowned in the flooded Godavari river and about 100 shops were damaged due to the flood water in Nashik district on Saturday night. The district administration and police department has already alerted the people residing in low lying areas along the bank of the river and asked them to evacuate the place. The flooding was due to the discharge of water from the overflowing Gangapur dam which provides water to the entire city. Other rivers in the district including Dharna, Valdevi, Girna and Mousam were flooded while the dams Landi, Dharna, Karanjvan, Ozarkhed and Haranbai were also overflowing.
Two children die as houses collapse
AURANGABAD: A four-year-old boy and a girl of the same age were killed and six others injured in two separate a house collapse incidents due to continous rainfall in Jalna district on Saturday night. According to the report reaching here on Sunday, Anil Ramdas Sonwane and Yogita Shinde were killed at Palaskheda Murtad in Bhokardan taluka and Varud village in Badanapur taluka respectively in Jalna district when the walls of their houses collapsed. Sangita’s parents and one-year-old brother, who were injured, were admitted to the Aurangabad government medical college here. The rivers and the nallah in the district are overflowing owing to the incessant rains since Thursday in Marathwada region.
Racket in music cassettes busted
JAIPUR: THE intelligence wing of the Rajasthan Police has busted a racket in piracy of recorded music following a raid on two premises here. Several audio duplicating machines, about 2,000 blank and recorded audio cassettes and more than 51,000 inlay cards were seized in two separate raids conducted here on Saturday, an official spokesman said here on Sunday. The two pirating units were illegally duplicating music cassettes of leading Indian music companies and selling them in the market by wrapping them in fake covers. According to preliminary investigations, the pirated cassettes were being sold in Jaipur and neighbouring areas, the spokesman said.
