The UP government has decided to transfer all recent cases of custodial deaths to CB-CID for investigation. The government’s decision has come in the wake of a series of The Indian Express reports about the death of a Block Committee member, Rashid Ahmed, in December 4 allegedly in police custody in Malihabad.
Two policemen had been suspended after being booked for murder. Newsline had also reported on the death of another youth, Bablu Richard at Payagpur police station on December 11.
Though the then SHOs of both Malihabad and Payagpur police stations — Shashi Bhushan Dwivedi and L S Yadav — had been suspended, the police are yet to make an arrest. Confirming the state governemnt’s move, Principal secretary (Home) Alok Sinha, said: ‘‘We will soon transfer all the custodial death cases to the CB-CID for proper investigation. This was a regular practice in the past. I do not think it is proper to get such cases investigated by the police of the same district. If the allegations are levelled against a member of a district police, impartial inquiry may not be possible,’’ Sinha told this reporter on Tuesday evening. ‘‘We have taken the Express stories seriously and so this move,’’ Sinha added.
He said he has already asked the home department to prepare a list of these cases. ‘‘In most of these cases, sanctions have already been given for the prosecution of the erring police officers,’’ he said.
