Unidentified gunmen shot at and critically wounded a local BJP leader here tonight, sparking communal violence after which curfew was clamped in some areas in the city.
Two persons, riding on a motor-cycle, fired at one O P Gupta, a trader and a local BJP leader, in Kanwariganj area wounding him seriously, police said.
The incident sparked communal violence with members of the two communities throwing stones at each other, they said. Police burst teargas shells to bring the situation under control.
As tension gripped the old city, authorities clamped curfew in three localities of the area as a precautionary measure. Adequate police were deployed in trouble-torn areas to maintain peace.
