With almost 98 per cent Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel on deployment in strife-torn areas, the world’s largest paramilitary force is all set to take help of Baba Ramdev to impart training in ‘yoga’ and ‘pranayam’ for de-stressing its men.
“We are planning to train 800 personnel in yogic techniques and pranayam under Baba Ramdev as master trainers who will later train the entire force,” a senior CRPF official said.
Steps are being taken to bring down the stress level among its personnel which will eventually help in bringing down the cases of fratricide.
Though 10 cases of fratricide was reported in 2007, the 201-battalion strong force has already seen four such cases in 2008.
“The men lead a life of high stress and duress since they are mostly posted in combat zones,” the official said.
According to government figures, the CRPF has 72 of its battalions involved in counter-insurgency operations in Jammu and Kashmir while its 44,000 men are performing similar duties in the North-Eastern states.
Besides counter insurgency operations, the force is also the foremost security apparatus against left-wing extremism in the states with 35,000 of them are engaged in containing the Naxals.
“The only chance for my men to work in a peace area (Force Headquarters), is only for one-fifth of their career span because of our deployment patterns,” Director General of CRPF V K Joshi said.
The official said the venue and dates for Baba Ramdev’s classes will soon be decided.
