Harbhajan Singh has got this whacky sense of humour that can wriggle him out of tight situations. He’s been a great influence in breaking the serious mode in the dressing room and describes the most dramatic moments on this tour—the boos he received from the Aussie crowd—with those usual rib-tickling qualities. Excerpts:
• On game vs Lanka:
It’s nice to have a win under your belt. It was very important for all of us to play well against Australia. Looking forward to tomorrow’s game. We have played Sri Lanka a lot and we know their strengths and weaknesses. We’ve our own strengths, too, without worrying about them. Our last clash in Brisbane and the way we played Murali was very good. He got two early wickets but he gave away 50-odd runs. It was very good the way Gautam and Dhoni played against him.
• On whether the momentum with India:
I don’t believe in momentum. I believe in going there and putting our best foot forward. Every game is different. It doesn’t matter what Sri Lanka did in the last game and that they’d a bad game. It’s going to be a good challenge for both sides and we’ll put up our best show.
• On his mental toughness to face the Aussie crowd:
I don’t really mind when people boo me, it just gives me a lot of pleasure that everbody knows me in the ground and they just are going for me. That inspires me to do well. The more they do it, I’m going to play more hard. I don’t hear what they say but the more they say the more tougher I get. I’ve worked hard on my batting on this tour and credit goes to Lalu (Lalchand Rajput) who has been looking afer my batting in the nets by throwing lots of balls to me.
• On Yuvraj’s poor scores on this tour:
He is a champion player and we are not worried about his form. In difficult situations he has scored many runs for India. He’s just a good game away. He will start making runs and hopefully he will start making runs tomorrow. He’s a top player and he is in the top-10 in the world.
• On his bowling last evening:
I didn’t bowl differently. I bowled according to the situation. It was great to see the way Ishant bowled and the way Sreesanth took those early wickets. It becomes easy for the spinner to come on and bowl when the opponents are already four five wickets down. It was a different sort of challenge for me last evening. Tomorrow, it could be different.
• On Ishant becoming a force:
Ishant is a guy who’s improved a lot from the Pakistan game in Bangalore when I saw him first. He is running in, bowling his heart out, bowling in the right areas. He is in a very, very good rhythm. It’s good to have Sreesant and Irfan bowl well too, and our fast bowling has become much stronger. Ishant is just 19. There shouldn’t be any break for any player. We should be looking forward to play every game. I don’t feel tired when I play for my country. I think that is the case with everyone.
