MUMBAI, May 21: The Mumbai Commissioner of Police R H Mendonca today ordered the detention of a dreaded criminal under the Maharashtra Prevention of Dangerous Activities MPDA after the J J Marg police arrested him in connection with a murder last year.

According to the police, Mohammed Usman alias Usman Bhura, was involved in the murder of one Mohammed Ismial Feroz Khan on November 7, 1997, at Undira Street, under the jurisdiction of Nagpada police station. The revolver used in the killing has been recovered, the police added.

Police sub-inspector Dilawar Sayyad, externment officer attached to J J Marg, said Usman was nabbed from his native village at Nizampura in Uttar Pradesh, where he fled after committing the murder. He had been eluding the police dragnet for more than five months, Sayyad revealed.

Usman, 32, named in over 22 reported and unreported cases of murder, attempt to murder, robberies, extortion and assault, was active in Undria Street, Surti Mohalla, Temkar Street, Mastan Talav, Nagpadaand other adjoining areas in central Mumbai.

The J J Marg police have taken precautionary measures to lodge Usman in the Central Prison at Nasik. The other members in the squad who nabbed the criminal are Assistant Inspector Sandeep Dal and Senior Inspector N M Asulkar.
