A day after a massive explosion ripped apart a black and yellow cab in Vile Parle, which was carrying suspected terrorists, the Crime Branch of the Mumbai Police has reportedly picked up the owner of the cab, Abdul Rahim Abubakar from his Dongri residence.
Abubakar had rented out the taxi, that was blown apart due to the high-intensity explosives, to a driver for the past three to four years.
According to an official of the Regional Transport Office at Tardeo, the taxi has been registered in the name of Abubakar on his Naupada residence address, where he no longer lives.
When Newsline visited the address on which the taxi is registered, Syed Ahmed, a resident of BIT Chawl and the suspect’s neighbour informed that Abubakar had shifted to Dongri around five years back.
Meanwhile, his youngest brother, Hussain Ali maintains that his brother is not involved in this incident. “He and his elder son were taken away by the police on Thursday morning but I’m not aware of anything,” said Ali.
According to Hussain Ali, Abubakar is a devout man and was planning to go for the Haj pilgrimage next year. “He did own the taxi but he had no involvement in the blast as he had given the taxi to some person to drive since three-four years. That driver has died,” said Hussain Ali while speaking to Newsline.
However, he refused to divulge the name of the driver. He added that the two brothers hardly interfered in each other’s business and therefore he would not be able to provide further details on the incident. “Humari zyada mulakaat nahi hoti sirf salaam-dua bus aur kuch nahi,” (We did not interact much) Hussain said.
Eyewitnesses said the power of the blast was such that the head of one of the victims was flung about 200 metre into the premises of the Golden Swan City Club nearby.
