With the amount of cricket being played these days, it is bound to take a toll on fitness of cricketers, whose active career may reduce from 10-15 to 4-5 years, feels former Indian all-rounder Roger Binny.

“With so much cricket being played, it has already started taking its toll on players’ fitness. Earlier, a player could play for his country anywhere between 10-15 years or more, but now that thing is going to change,” Binny told reporters here today.

Binny, who was part of the India’s 1983 World Cup winning squad, said “workload on cricketers these days is too much and it has started taking its toll. See, how many players have to take a long break from playing owing to growing number of injuries.

“The Boards must take note of this and protect the players,” said Binny, who was here to promote Dehradun-based National School of Cricket (NSC), which provides coaching to budding cricketers and at the same time offers them educational certification programmes so that they can continue with their studies as well.

To a question, he said more and more young Indian players should be given a chance in leagues like the IPL and ICL.

“Younger talent needs to be promoted,” felt 52-year-old Binny.
