Seizing an opportunity to differentiate itself from the Left in opposing the nuclear deal, the BJP on Friday questioned CPI(M)’s patriotic credentials. The BJP said the CPI(M) gave primacy to Chinese interests and national interest was only secondary to them.

Responding to CPI(M) General Secretary Prakash Karat’s statement that the US was using India to counter China’s emergence as a world power, BJP spokesperson Ravi Shankar Prasad said: “Prakash Karat’s comments exposes the sheer duplicity of the CPI(M) and establishes once and for all that for CPI(M) the interests of China are primary and that of India secondary.”

Accusing the Communists of double-standards in its approach towards the United States, Prasad asked whether “US capital loses its imperial colour if it is invested in a Left-ruled state (read West Bengal).” He said the BJP’s opposition to the nuclear deal is defined in terms of India’s national interests.

Ridiculing the CPI(M)’s stand that it wants a only a discussion and no voting on the Indo-US nuclear deal in Parliament, Prasad said the Left party is against voting as it did not want to be exposed. “Their opposition to the deal is just a show. A voting will expose them,” Prasad said adding that the CPI(M) will never snap ties with the UPA.
