A day after the CPI(M) softened its criticism of the UPA Government, the CPI today declared that it was time the Manmohan Singh Government began to ‘‘perform and act’’. Party national secretary D.Raja said: ‘‘We cannot be happy or satisfied with the performance of the UPA.

The new government ‘‘cannot ignore the concerns of the Left parties’’ and it should realise that ‘‘it is a multi-party coalition government’’, he told mediapersons. Insisting that the Left parties ‘‘cannot be taken for granted’’, he hastened to add that the ‘‘concerns of the Left were the concerns of the people’’.

Objecting to the Government’s move to increase FDI caps in certain sectors, Raja said: ‘‘We want a performing Government. It cannot pursue NDA policies or go back to the 1990s.’’ While the CPI was not opposed to FDI per se, it ‘‘cannot allow FDI to take over any sector’’, he clarified.
